Manor has been a modestly growing small town on the eastern edge of Austin and Travis County for many decades. Created in 1872, Manor had 5200 residents in the last census. As development has moved steadily east in search of affordable land, a boom has begun and with it, traffic congestion. Traffic on US 290 East between US 183 and SH 130 has increased more than 78% since 1990. As a result, the initial leg of the Manor Expressway has recently opened. This new accessibility has in turn driven more gorwth to Manor. New residential developments are being added and expanded throughout the area. While home prices are rising, Manor is still one of the most affordable places to live in the Austin Metro area.
Manor offers residents a wide array of outdoor and recreational activities. Jennie Lane Park is located in Manor’s historical downtown and serves as the center of most community-oriented events. A few of Manor’s annual community events include the Manor Farmers Market, Manor’s Summertime Movie Series and Christmas in the Park. Manor, TX is also home to East Metro Park and ShadowGlen which features a 4-acre water park and junior Olympic-size pool
Manor is one of the faster growing suburbs of Austin. Manor has been the location for a number of movies, notably What's Eating Gilbert Grape starring Johnny Depp. The story centered around an autistic boy, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, who regularly disrupted the towns tranquility by climbing Manors old water tower. The tank, although no longer used, remains a landmark in the downtown district.
